Were there little pencil marks on a door frame at the house you grew up in? Most likely it was on a door casing somewhere in your house, well that is if you were fortunate enough to stay in one place that long. Did Mom or Dad make you stand straight up and hold still as a board while they made that mark, measured it and dated it?

Accuracy was important, if only for bragging rights. As in, “My kid is XX tall—how tall is yours?”

Liquid and gas measurement in the oilfield is for much more than bragging—it’s all about the right amount of money changing hands between the seller and the buyer. It’s in everyone’s interest for those measurements to be accurate down to several decimal points.
