Fishing to optimize production

I’ve been an obsessed angler for years. I don’t need a special reason or day to go fishing either – I go any chance I get. Sunny 108-degree Texas days, Christmas day, or drizzly cool days, it isn’t about the day, temperature, or location – it’s simply about the experience.

There is something about the peacefulness of being on the lake, or a river that captures my senses, and instantly relaxes me, while at the same time ignites my creative side with a new sense unlimited possibilities. But it isn’t the excitement of actually catching a fish at all (since it’s not my favorite meal) – but it’s the experience that captivates my mind, warms my soul, and energizes my spirit.

If you’ve ever gone to the doctor to get some medicine at the first sign of a fever—to try to shorten the illness—you understand what I mean.

Most of the time now, in the oil patch, the first we know of a problem is when the pump breaks down, the compressor slams on the brakes, a valve gives way or there’s some other catastrophic—and expensive—problem.

What if we could use Big Data to start detecting the lead-up to a problem and fix it before it became a shutdown or, in the case of a pipeline, a big leak? It could help our people work smarter by doing small jobs in time to reduce the major ones.

The trip turned out to be more than an exercise in technology: the fun of working in a hot corn field in August picking up some unwelcome critters along the way, like local ticks for example, was priceless! On a hot day when I want my favorite cold slushy drink—known in the industry as an FCB, or frozen carbonated beverage—I don’t want to be disappointed when I get to the store. My worst case scenario is to see an “Out of Order” sign when you’re ready to enjoy that smooth, ice-cold fizziness deliciousness. Or worse, when you push your cup against the lever and it splatters and spits at you because it’s out of syrup.

It’s bad news for retailers, too, because an FCB customer often doesn’t make another selection—they walk!

Now, thanks to us at Zedi, one retailer is saving money each month on their FCB machines because of what they know about product flow and something we call “mean time to failure.”
