Zedi Leverages its IIoT to Diversify into the AgriFood and Food Service Industries

Posted by Community Contributor on Aug 8, 2017 2:49:03 PM

Calgary, AB – (August 8, 2017) – Zedi Inc. is pleased to announce the first three applications of its Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform into the AgriFood industry.

The first positions Zedi’s IIoT platform capabilities in primary production with livestock, and involves monitoring important information on feed, water supply and living conditions on a 45,000 chicken operation on a farm in Montana.  All data collected reports into Zedi Access™, Zedi’s cloud-based application, and Zedi Go, Zedi’s mobile App for iOS and Android. This enables the farm operators to be more responsive should feed run low, or living conditions deteriorate through alarms by exception.

The second application uses Zedi’s IIoT platform capabilities in primary production, on the crop side of the business. Zedi has paired its Zedi Mote Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) technology with third-party soil moisture and temperature sensors to monitor conditions on a 640-acre farm in Nebraska. The sensors and Zedi Motes are powered from AA batteries, and communicate through a LPWAN hotspot to a Zedi IIoT Gateway located nearby, which then relays the sensor information to Zedi Access™ and Zedi Go. This enables the farm operator better insight into the need for water application, saving them money on pivot irrigation costs.

The final application involves asset monitoring in the Food and Beverage service industry in the greater Edmonton area. Zedi has used its Zedi Mote LPWAN technology to allow Food dispensing machines to communicate through an LPWAN hotspot to a Zedi IIoT Gateway located nearby, and report important operational information to Zedi Access and Zedi Go. This enables technical service staff to monitor fill levels of consumable inputs and machine performance, allowing them to better manage servicing strategy. It helps reduce call-out costs and improve uptime for the client, enhancing revenue generation of the machine.

All three applications leverage Zedi’s 15 years of experience in gathering sensor-sourced asset performance data as well as their ongoing innovation in LPWAN technology. These sectors are expected to drive significant traffic growth on the Zedi Platform, which as of July 31, 2017 monitors 1.42 million sensors, and consumes 49 million readings per day.

In Canada and the US the primary agriculture, input dealers, and equipment suppliers represent $420 billion in annual GDP (2016 figures). Canada is the world’s 5th largest Agriculture and AgriFood System (AAFS) exporter, while the US is 2nd. In its February 2017 tranche of reports, the Advisory Council on Economic Growth highlighted the AgriFood sector as a high-potential sector for Canada, and challenges facing the AgriFood industry throughout North America – traceability for food quality and nutrition, productivity, GHG reduction, sustainability in the face of climate change – can all benefit from the application of IIoT technology like Zedi’s as part of the “Smart Agriculture” transformation.

Mounds View, MN – March 28, 2017 — Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., today announced interoperability between the MultiTech MultiConnect® Conduit™ gateway and Zedi’s Field Gateway Edge Server Software (FGES). The MultiConnect Conduit, used in conjunction with Zedi’s FGES Software, provides a secure and scalable application-hosting framework for custom gateway applications that enable connected solutions in a wide variety of IIoT applications.

“IoT is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ application,” said Daniel Quant, vice president, product management and strategic marketing at MultiTech. “We strive to enable connected solutions to the widest possible variety of IIoT applications and our new partnership with Zedi further expands this reach through further extending LoRaWANs groundbreaking potential.”

The MultiConnect Conduit is the industry’s most configurable, manageable, and scalable IoT communications gateway. Quick to deploy and easy to use, the Conduit gateway supports both wired and wireless connectivity standards through two accessory card slots. The Conduit enables a wide variety of asset types to be optimally connected and controlled using a slew of different application and communication protocols.

Zedi’s FGES Software is a Linux-based application framework originally designed for Zedi’s FG-400 and FG-600 series of edge IIoT Field Gateway solutions. It provides tight integration with Zedi’s cloud-based Zedi AccessTM platform, an established IIoT solution serving 1.3 million sensors primarily in the Upstream Oil & Gas sector.

Zedi and MultiTech also announced that Zedi has paired its FGES-powered MultiTech Conduit gateway with a Zedi-designed ZediMote module, which incorporates the MultiTech MultiConnect® mDotTM module.

“Zedi brings years of practical problem-solving experience using IIoT solutions in the Oil & Gas industry. We see adding LPWA capability at the edge of the network as an enabler to both extend our solution suites in our existing markets, while supporting a pivot into new industry verticals,” said James Freeman, Zedi CTO. “We have since completed a trial of MultiTech’s LoRaWANTM solution using a FGES-powered Conduit and our ZediMote in a retail food services industry application. City of St. Albert Collaborates to Test Smart City Sensor Networks

Posted by Community Contributor on Mar 14, 2017 11:13:47 AM

Students and industry leaders join City to conduct pilot project

The City of St. Albert has launched a Smart City sensor pilot project, which is the first pilot within a larger review of wireless sensor networks and management platforms throughout 2017. The pilots are intended to provide a low-risk, low-cost means to test the application of sensor networks and platforms with a focus on evaluating communications reliability and range, device integration, platform functionality and cost. This first pilot involves the installation of a small weather station on the roof of a City facility, remotely connected to a wireless LoRa network - a low-power wide-area network intended to connect wireless battery operated devices over distances of up to three kilometers away in urban areas. A second location and different sensor device is also under review, to increase the range of the pilot and the type of information collected over the LoRa network.

“This is a great example of how St. Albert is leading the way as an innovative community that places high value on collaboration and data-based decision making,” says Mayor Nolan Crouse. “It is important for the City to assess several technologies as it considers expanding its sensing capacity in the most effective and economical manner. I’m also proud that our Administration works hard to ensure that the City is well-positioned to capitalize on opportunities both now and into the future.”

The weather station’s sensors collect instant readings on outdoor temperature, humidity, rainfall, barometric pressure, wind speed and wind direction. This data is then transmitted wirelessly every few minutes to LoRa network equipment, which is connected to the Internet and stored within a database to make the results available through a web portal. Readings can be provided as instantaneous data or graphs showing trends over longer periods of time and may also be downloaded or posted for public viewing.

The pilot aligns directly with St. Albert’s Smart City Master Plan – a guiding document that describes how the community will advance innovation and collaboration efforts, and apply new technologies and data sources for public benefit. The delivery of small pilot projects and the expanded use of sensors to collect and respond to live data were each referenced as priorities within the Master Plan.

To support the pilot, officials in the City’s Innovation and Technology Services department are working with two partners - the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and Edmonton based company Zedi.

Zedi is a leading technology and services company in the field of upstream oil and gas production operations. Zedi is currently expanding its ‘internet of things’ (IoT) platform and expertise for use in other applications in support of Alberta’s communities. Zedi expanded its IoT platform by introducing LoRa to the Alberta market in other pilot activity in late 2016. The use of LoRa combined with Zedi’s existing integrated platform meant the company could install the St. Albert weather station and have it reporting wirelessly that same morning.

NAIT’s involvement is through its Bachelor of Technology (BTech) program, designed to educate future technologists with the technical theory, innovative skills, and ethical and social awareness to meet the challenges of today’s economy. Three BTech students are working on a capstone project which intends to assess several technical considerations for LoRa networks, including effective range in urban and rural areas, power consumption under various real-world conditions and reliability of communications. St. Albert is a strong supporter of NAIT’s BTech program and has participated in several recent shared projects.

The pilot is scheduled to finish in spring 2017 with a "capstone" presentation by the NAIT students and a final report to Zedi and City Administration. The City also has plans to test additional sensor networks, devices and platforms over the course of 2017, as part of its larger review.
