The human element is the biggest part of cyber security

More and more of our clients are concerned about their own data security, and rightfully so. Hardly a week goes by without the announcement of some huge data security breach.

And for those who use our automation and remote monitoring solutions, they’re concerned about Zedi’s security—because our systems are connected with theirs. Remember, in the Target breach in 2016, hackers broke in through the retailer’s HVAC contractor. So it’s legit for companies to be concerned about the security of anyone who’s connected with their system.

It’s why we at Zedi take great security precautions in all of our data systems. In fact, ours were designed from the start to be securable as well as functional and efficient.

You might be thinking that security involves encrypted transmissions and password-protected portals—and you’d be right. We have all that and more on the machine side.

But did you know, that on a national basis, approximately 90 percent of data breaches happen—are you sitting down—because an employee opened a phishing or otherwise malicious email?

Let that soak in a minute90 percent!

At Zedi, we realize that human training is a critical part of cyber security. How do we do that?

First of all, we have a very tight spam filter companywide. We remove as much as possible before any human ever sees it.

Second, I myself make sure I remind our people on a regular basis to look out and not to click on anything that looks remotely suspicious. Let’s face it, the spammers and hackers never rest—they’re always refining their craft—so neither do we.

If I see a new take on phishing or otherwise malicious emails, I’ll do a screen capture—so no one can accidentally click on it—and send it out to everyone as a reminder. We also point out that you can hover the mouse over the link in an email to see where that link really goes. If it doesn’t show the real business’s web address, then it’s most likely not legit.

All of this comes back to our commitment to you and your data security. Sure, we’re protecting our own data as well, but it’s all connected. They call it the worldwide web for a reason.

Ransomware alone was a $1 billion business in 2016, so it’s no wonder people do it—but we’re going to do everything we can to help you keep your data and systems safe.
